Athletics New Zealand are looking at targeted identification strategies to help find talented individuals;
- Who are new to the sport
- Who are transferring from other sports
- Who are within the sport
Identified individuals will be offered support and the opportunity to test their skills and trial for events suited to their abilities. Individuals who show traits associated with successful athletes in their chosen event will then be offered the opportunity to train with a coach in a structured training environment to further develop their abilities.
Aspiring Athletes (formally known as the Young Olympians) is a programme endorsed by Athletics New Zealand and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association (NZSSAA). The aim of the programme is to provide incentive and recognition of leading youth athletes in the sport. Members of Aspiring Athletes are provided with information and opportunities to help encourage and retain them in the sport.
