Peter Pfitzinger Confirmed as Athletics New Zealand CEO

Athletics New Zealand is very pleased to announce the appointment of Peter (Pete) Pfitzinger as the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer. Pete has been the Interim CEO of Athletics New Zealand since January this year and impressed with his leadership of the organisation.

“We are absolutely delighted to have someone of Pete’s mana, experience and standing within the sporting community leading our team into the future,” said Athletics New Zealand’s chair, Cameron Taylor.

Pete has a long involvement in high performance sport as an athlete, coach, sports physiologist and manager. He was a world class marathon runner, representing the USA at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, before moving into the fields of exercise physiology and sport management.

With over 20 years’ experience within New Zealand sport, Pete was CEO of the NZ Academy of Sport North Island, a forerunner to High Performance Sport NZ, from 2004 to 2011. He played key roles in the development of HPSNZ and the high performance system in New Zealand. He most recently led the Capacity & Expertise Group focused on enhancing high performance sport capability and worked closely with Athletics New Zealand in that role.
