Athletics New Zealand Announce 2025 Out of Stadia Calendar
Athletics New Zealand is thrilled to unveil the 2025 Out of Stadia calendar, highlighting incredibly popular events showcasing the best of New Zealand’s running and racing culture. This season promises unforgettable moments for athletes and fans alike, from cross-country championships in the heart of Christchurch to the iconic road relays and marathon championships.
A full calendar, including the road mile, 50k, 100k, and 24-hour championships, will be confirmed in 2025.
NZ Short Trail Running Championships
Three Peaks Mountain Run – Dunedin, Sunday 30th March 2025
The NZ Short Trail Running Championships will take place as part of the iconic Three Peaks Mountain Run, hosted by Leith Harriers. This challenging 53km course begins in Woodhaugh Gardens and finishes at Chingford Park, taking runners through some of Dunedin’s most picturesque and demanding terrain. The race starts with a climb through Ross Creek Reserve and Craigieburn, ascending to the Pineapple Track and Flagstaff Summit before traversing the rugged Swampy Ridge Track. Participants will navigate steep descents, muddy sections, and the technical forestry trails of Mount Cargill, culminating in a thrilling 4km descent into Bethune’s Gully.
NZ Senior Marathon Championships
Christchurch Marathon – Christchurch, Sunday 13th April 2025
The 2025 season begins with the NZ Marathon Championships, held as part of the Christchurch Marathon. Winding through Christchurch’s central city over four laps, the Christchurch Marathon will see runners flying past spectators to keep the energy high the whole race.
The course is flat, fast and Christchurch often provides ideal marathoning conditions, so times are set to be hot in 2025.
NZ Mountain Running Championships
Cardrona Alpine Resort, Wanaka – Saturday 26th April 2025
The views and the vert on offer will be equally breathtaking as the NZ Mountain Running Championships takes over the domain of skiers and snowboarders at the world-class Cardrona Alpine Resort. With Wanaka’s iconic alpine landscape as the backdrop and over 1000m of climbing over 8km on offer, this event will be hard to miss.
NZ Masters Marathon Championships
Rotorua Marathon – Rotorua, Saturday 3rd May 2025
Masters athletes will vie for national titles at the NZ Masters Marathon Championships, part of the iconic Rotorua Marathon. With a refreshed start and a stunning new finish line right beside the Novotel Rotorua, the marathon offers an unforgettable journey through Rotorua’s scenic beauty.
NZ 5km Road Championships
Runway5 – Rotorua, Saturday 3rd May 2025
The lightning-fast course at Rotorua Airport makes the NZ 5km Road Championships one of the calendar’s most exciting road racing events. A revamped multi-lap course will have athletes flying around a fully lit course within earshot of Party Central, with a DJ on the decks and fan zones.
The NZ 5km Road Championships is a compulsory World Road Running Championships 2025 selection trial.
NZ Half Marathon Championships (Seniors & Masters)
Wellington Marathon – Wellington, Sunday 29th June 2025
The NZ Half Marathon Championships will be held within the vibrant setting of the Wellington Marathon. Runners will compete on a picturesque course showcasing the capital city’s waterfront, battling for top honours in senior and master categories.
NZ Cross Country Championships
North Hagley Park, Christchurch – Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd August 2025
The NZ Cross Country & Relay Championships will descend on Christchurch’s North Hagley Park. We’re bringing the racing to the fans with the never-before-raced course incorporating sections of the Hagley Golf Course, designed so fans can catch every step of the head-to-head racing right in the heart of Garden City.
NZ 10km Road Championships
Architectural Glass Products Precinct, Cambridge – Saturday 30th August 2025
The New Zealand 10km Road Championships return to Cambridge in the heart of the Waikato. The new looped course around the Architectural Glass Product Precinct promises to be flat and fast as walkers & runners from around the nation descend on the brand-new nationals’ course.
NZ Road Relay Championships
Feilding – Saturday 4th October 2025
The much-loved NZ Road Relay Championships return to the open roads of Fielding in 2025. Hosts Feilding Moa Harriers have crafted a revamped seven-leg, 68km course starting at Manfield in Feilding and running through the iconic clock tower before finishing at Halcombe.
The six-leg relay and four-leg courses will cater to various grades. Halcombe will serve as the finish-line hub, and a lively celebration zone is planned at the sports field.
“We’ve introduced variation to the legs and added a challenging 12.2km section,” says Rob Dabb from Feilding Moa. “This year’s course is designed to offer something for everyone, from seasoned competitors to emerging talent.”
