A raft of household names, including Olympians and Paralympians, are vying for national titles at the annual championships.

We’ve got the rundown on the top highlights of our two key sessions – Finals Friday and Super Saturday. Dive into the top athletes to keep your eye on this weekend. But don’t miss the non-stop action all weekend as athletes from around the country compete for national titles across four age groups!

Finals Friday

The first wave of senior national titles will be decided on Friday afternoon, and the lineup is stacked with world-class talent.

  • Maddi Wesche (Shot Put) – Fresh off her Olympic silver medal in Paris, Wesche will be opening her season at the Jennian Homes NZ Track and Field Champs, aiming to extend her national dominance with another commanding performance.
  • Ethan Olivier (Triple Jump) – The World U20 Champion will bring his explosive power to the men’s triple jump. With a world indoors qualification mark in his sights, the young gun will be dialed in on Friday in the highly technical Triple Jump.
  • Connor Bell (Discus) – The national record holder (68.10m) and Olympian headlines the men’s discus, as he looks to launch beyond the 65m mark once again.
  • Tori Moorby (née Peeters) (Javelin) – New Zealand’s leading javelin thrower will be chasing another national title as she steps onto the runway for the first time in 2025. With an eye on the World Champs in September, the newly married thrower will put on a show.

Super Saturday – The Pinnacle of the Championships

Saturday afternoon’s prime-time session will be the must-watch event of the meet, with the biggest names in New Zealand athletics stepping into the spotlight.

  • Hamish Kerr (High Jump) – The Olympic champion and Halberg Sportsman of the Year returns to Dunedin to showcase the form that saw him conquer Paris. He delivered a thrilling 2.30m leap in front of home crowds at the International Track Meet – what will he pull off in Dunedin.
  • Tom Walsh vs. Jacko Gill (Shot Put) – This long-standing rivalry will add another chapter as Walsh looks to “reclaim his national title” from Gill who’s had a strong start to the season, throwing 21.85m at the Sir Graeme Douglas International.
  • Zoe Hobbs (100m) – Oceania’s fastest woman is back to defend her national title. After some flying 60m times set this season, Hobbs will hit her stride in Dunedin.
  • Tiaan Whelpton (100m) – Fresh off breaking the New Zealand 100m resident record, Whelpton will look to dominate the blue-riband sprint event in front of a roaring crowd.
  • Eliza McCartney & Olivia McTaggart (Pole Vault) – McCartney, the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, will compete for the first time in 2025 alongside the 2024 Olympic Finalist and her training partner, McTaggart. Both will go head-to-head in one of the most exciting field event matchups of the championships.
  • Sam Tanner & Sam Ruthe (1500m) – The Tauranga duo of Sams will be the leading contenders in the Men’s 1500m, with the heats on Saturday and the Finals on Sunday.

Dunedin has drawn a crowd, with over 750 athletes lining up over the four age groups contested. Over 150 officials and 130 volunteers also ensure the championships run like clockwork!
