A half marathon event has been introduced as part of Reboot: The Athletes Marathon which will host the 2022 New Zealand Senior Marathon Championships in Tai Tapu, Canterbury on Sunday 15 May.

The 21.1km event throws up an attractive opportunity to run a quick half marathon time on a flat, fast course against a strong domestic field. The half marathon will start at 7.30am – the same time as the marathon – on one 6km lap, a 12km lap out and back along the Old Tai Tapu Road and then a further 3km of the next lap.

The 2022 New Zealand Marathon Championship was originally scheduled to take place in conjunction with the Christchurch Marathon on April 10 – however following the cancellation of the race, Athletics NZ collaborated with both Athletics Canterbury and the support of several others to offer an event under the red traffic light setting.

Interested athletes will be required to complete an entry application with a panel comprising representatives from Athletics Canterbury, the LOC and Athletics NZ will evaluate all applications and make decisions on the allocation of places based on a mutually agreed qualifying criteria.

The entry portal via the Athletics Canterbury website is here and will be open until 8pm on Tuesday 19 April

Note, the half-marathon will not be a national championship event unlike the full marathon.

Athletes wishing to be considered should email details and credentials to [email protected] by 9 April 2022 latest.

The entry fee for the marathon is $100 per athlete including GST. Athletics Community Runner entries $100 plus Athletics Canterbury $25 fee.

For the half marathon entry is $50 for registered runners and $65 for community runners.
