The Paris 2024 Paralympics are more than just a major event for our top athletes; it’s also a pinnacle event for our leading officials. Paris saw three of New Zealand’s top officials appointed to prominent roles at this year’s Games, with Ruth Liong serving as one of three Technical Delegates, Trevor Spittle as the Chair of the Jury of Appeal, and Paul Nicholls as Track Referee. These prestigious appointments demonstrate New Zealand’s high standing in the world of Para Athletics.

Ruth commented: “It was a privilege to once again officiate at the Paralympics and to be part of an amazing event! It was wonderful to see the culmination of the past three years’ hard work in an incredible event where the athletes were the stars. It was thrilling to be back in a full stadium and hear the passionate support for the athletes, which at times was deafening.”

“It was fantastic to be able to cheer on the Kiwis in person, and see them all doing so well. The competition was full of outstanding performances, with many world, Paralympic, regional, and national records being broken in every session. It was a special honour to present some medals and see the pride on the athletes’ faces at their achievements. Thanks to my fellow ITOs, the NTOs, and the wonderful volunteers, without whom there would be no event – you were outstanding, and I’m proud to be one of you. Bring on LA!”

Trevor stated: “It is always a pleasure to be at a Para event and watch them achieve on the world stage.”

“Seeing New Zealand win six medals in athletics was a real buzz! Spending time and living in the Paralympic village was a truly unique experience, with many stories to tell.”

Paul said: “It was a real honour and privilege to officiate at my first Paralympics. My lasting memories will be of officiating in a stadium filled with 70,000 spectators, working with my fellow ITOs and NTOs to assist in delivering an amazing competition, and finally, the continued amazement and respect for all Para athletes and what they can achieve despite the obstacles they have overcome.”
