Our latest My Favourite segment features talented New Zealand U18 800m champion Kiera Hall. We found out more about the Christchurch-based athlete who has won selection to compete for New Zealand at the World U20 Championships in Colombia.
Favourite athletics venue
I really like the Nelson track (Saxton Field). It has very pretty views, I train there in summer when it’s warm with no wind while on holiday in Kaiteriteri.
Favourite piece of coaching advice
From my coach Angie (Petty) – all the hard work has been done just go out there and give it everything.
Favourite training session
My favourite session is the 10x300m with short breaks between reps, the session goes surprisingly fast.
Favourite athlete of all time
Keely Hodgkinson, she isn’t much older than me and has already achieved so much. I loved watching her race and place second in the 800m at the Tokyo Olympics.
Favourite competition you have ever watched
The Tokyo Olympics. I loved watching the athletics as well as all the different sports.
Favourite athletics website
Stalking the ANZ rankings.
Favourite athletics roommate
Rosaria (Gibson) is my favourite athletics roommate even though we don’t always get much sleep, it’s always fun and staying with her makes competitions less nerve-wracking.
Favourite pre-competition snack
I always eat peanut butter and banana on toast before I race, I don’t really enjoy it but it’s a kind of a superstition now.
Favourite other sport
Surf Life Saving, I have done it since I was aged eight, and I especially love the water events. I don’t enjoy the 2km so much, running on sand is way worse than on the track.
Favourite Ice cream flavour
I don’t think I can pick one, but the top three are chocolate, salted caramel and cookie dough.
Favourite day of the week
Fridays, I love my rest day.
Favourite thing about New Zealand
I love our beaches.
Favourite overseas country visited
Tahiti, the beaches are unreal. The water is so clear and warm, which is perfect for snorkelling.
Favourite treat
Brownie with cream and ice cream.
