New Zealand U20 400m champion Lex Revell-Lewis is currently preparing to compete for his country at next week’s World U20 Championships (1-6 August) in Cali, Colombia. Here he shares a few of his personal favourite
Favourite achievement in athletics
My first ever major medal – A 400m bronze at the North Island Colgate Games as a 12-year-old, behind Charles Roil (gold) and Joseph Ayoade (silver).
Favourite athletics venue
Nothing beats my home training base – The Trusts Arena in Henderson. It is also the track where I set my 100m and 400m PBs.
Favourite piece of coaching advice
“If it’s comfortable it’s too easy” – Michael Norman, the 2022 World 400m champion.
Favourite training session
Anything with 300s in it.
Favourite athlete of all time
Other than the GOAT himself, Usain Bolt. Michael Norman is a big inspiration of mine.
Favourite competition you’ve ever watched
The Tokyo Olympic men’s 400m hurdles was unmatched. The world record set by Karsten Warholm was obliterated, yet it was a close race all the way up to the last hurdle.
Favourite athletics website
The World Athletics top lists. I liked watching myself slowly move down the rankings after our domestic season finishes.
Favourite school athletics memory
Winning the Junior Boys 400m title at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field Championships in 2019.
Favourite athletics room-mate
My training partners Troy Middleton and Mia Powell.
Favourite pre-competition snack
Not a snack, but I prepare cold fruit tea in my drink bottle the night before a race. It helps quench my thirst without the added sweetness.
Favourite other sport
I used to do hockey back in the day, but team sports aren’t really my thing.
Favourite Ice cream flavour
You can’t go wrong with chocolate ice-cream
Favourite YouTube video
The 2016 Rio Olympics 400m race. I can rehearse the commentary of Wayde van Niekerk’s last 100m. (Van Niekerk set the men’s world 400m record in that race)
Favourite day of the week
Sunday – it always seems to be sunny, I wonder why.
Favourite video game
I may or may not have a Clash Royale addiction
Favourite thing about New Zealand
Nature just seems to have a healthy shade of green here.
Favourite overseas country visited
Jamaica
