Stalwart athletics official Fred Holmes of Whanganui passed away on Monday 10 August aged 77.
He was a leading official, officiating at many national and international events, including the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Fred had been a resident of Whanganui since 1968 and involved with Athletics Wanganui since 1981, fulfilling many roles including president. For many years, he was the Manawatu/Wanganui centre officials coordinator.
He was executive officer of Cooks Gardens for 16 years from 1995, overseeing the redevelopment of the multi-purpose stadium.
He received an Athletics New Zealand merit award in 2001.
Away from athletics, he was also president and life member of the Royal Wanganui Opera House.
Fred’s son Martin represented New Zealand at the 1986 World Junior Athletic Championships in the 2000m steeplechase.
He was the dearly loved husband and soulmate of Christine. Beloved Dad, father-in-law and Grandpop of Martin, Verity, Marcus, and Ashlee Holmes and Helen, Darryl, Samantha, and Nicholas Petherick.
Loved brother of the late Val and Roy Williams, Dot and the late Peter Seed, and brother-in-law of Paul Smith. Step-brother of Denise, Kevin, and Bev. Much loved uncle of his nieces and nephews and their families.
