Remembering Sir Peter Snell

When: Friday 20 December, 7.50pm
Where: Daikin Night of 5s, AUT Millennium, 17 Antares Place, Rosedale

On Friday 20 December we will take a moment to remember Sir Peter Snell at the annual Daikin Night of 5s track event at AUT Millennium in Rosedale, Auckland. Athletics New Zealand Chief Executive Peter Pfitzinger will introduce Barry Magee at 7.50pm to speak, followed by a moments silence. Barry Magee won bronze in the marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics and trained with Snell under legendary coach Arthur Lydiard.

A three-time Olympic gold medallist, double Commonwealth champion and six-time world record breaker, Sir Peter Snell’s achievements under the revolutionary training methods of Lydiard formed the centrepiece of a golden era of New Zealand endurance running. His achievements on the track are a huge part of New Zealand’s sporting history and will continue to inspire generations to come.

The Daikin Night of 5s, hosted by Bays Athletics, will feature 180 athletes competing over short and middle distances including the 800m, one of Sir Peter Snell’s specialist events. The Daikin Night of 5s is free and open to the public, with food and drinks available onsite. The track programme begins at 6.20pm and is available to view here.

The family has communicated that they will hold a small memorial for Sir Peter Snell close to their residence in the US with close friends and family, but there won’t be a public service.
