Christchurch-based sprinter Rosie Elliott was eliminated from the first round of the women’s 400m at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon after finishing eighth in heat six of the women’s 400m, recording 54.92.

The 24-year-old was New Zealand’s sole competitor during the morning session on day three inside the historic Hayward Field, and she will be disappointed she could not deliver her best in the biggest competition of her career.

Rosie, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise in her first season as a 400m sprinter this season having previously specialised in the 100m and 200m, boasts a PB of 52.59 and has snared both the New Zealand and Oceania titles this year.

However, clearly short of her best, she crossed the line eighth behind heat six winner Anna Kielbasinska of Poland (50.63).

Rosie, who was the first New Zealand female athlete for 21 years to appear at a World Championship 400m, said: “It was obviously not a great time but that is okay because it was a difficult build up to comp. After Oceania Championships (in June) I took three weeks off training, I had the flu, a urinary tract infection and Covid all within in quick succession and two-and-a-half weeks ago I was in isolation and didn’t know I was coming (to World Championships). I think all things considered today was awesome. My coach and I acknowledged it would be hard, and it was hard, but it was such an invaluable experience.”
