Scott Newman appointed as Athletics NZ High Performance Director

Experienced sports administrator Scott Newman has been appointed as Athletics NZ High Performance Director.

We are delighted to confirm that Scott Newman has been appointed Athletics NZ High Performance Director until November 2022, providing stability and continuity to our HP Programme during a critical year.

Scott has been Athletics NZ HP Coach Manager since October 2017 and served as Athletics NZ Chief Executive from 2007 to 2014. During part of the Tokyo cycle, Scott took on much of the HP programme leadership as former HP Director Scott Goodman focused on coaching Dame Valerie Adams.

Scott brings a wealth of experience to the role having formerly served in various leadership roles across a range of sports including as Hockey NZ (HP Director), Swimming NZ (Chief Executive), Canoe Racing NZ (support for CEO), and Chief Executive of NZ Water Polo from 2003 to 2007.

Within athletics, Scott has been involved in administration at Club and Centre level for more than 30 years and served as NZ Secondary Schools Athletics Association Secretary for four years. As an athlete, Scott won three New Zealand senior men’s triple jump titles and also medalled in the 110m hurdles and high jump.

Athletics NZ CEO Pete Pfitzinger said: “We are very fortunate that Scott has accepted the role until later this year. His standing and experience in sport is huge and I’m sure he will show outstanding leadership skills during a very busy year of action highlighted by the World Championships and Commonwealth Games.”

High Performance Director Scott Newman said: “I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge of HP Director. We are well placed leading into a new phase of the Athletics NZ High Performance programme, and I hope to provide stability and continuity leading into the next Olympic cycle.”
