Sir Peter Snell International Track Meeting

For the first time in 50 years, the New Zealand Mile Championship will be contested at the 2020 Sir Peter Snell International Track Meeting.

The event, to be held at Cooks Gardens in Whanganui on Saturday, 14 March 2020, will be a celebration of New Zealand’s athletics and, in particular, the traditional mile race made famous at Cooks Gardens in 1962 when Sir Peter Snell set his first One Mile World record.

At the elite end, the best of New Zealand middle distance athletes will compete for the first national mile titles to be awarded in 50 years.

Titles will be available in the following grades: Senior Men and Women, Under 20 Men and Women.

The current New Zealand titleholders from the 1968/69 season are:

Senior Men:
Dick Quax, Waikato, 4m 05.3s

Senior women:
Heather Thomson, Auckland, 4m 52.5s

Under 20 Men:
Rod Dixon, Wellington, 4m 19.8s

New Zealand One Mile Championship

Seeding for the Mile races will be based on 1,500m and mile times from 1 May 2019 onwards. Those athletes who do not qualify for the A race will be seeded in B and subsequent races and the Championship will be conducted as straight timed finals with seeded heats.

Performances at the event will be recognised for national qualification purposes and the meet will be Athletics New Zealand permit conditions. The permit level for the New Zealand Mile Championship will be a World Athletics D permit for the purpose of World Athletics ranking points.
