The dates for the 2021-22 New Zealand Continental Tour and Area Permit Meets have been approved by the Oceania Athletics Association.
The opening Area Permit Meet will take place on Tuesday December 21 with the Night of 5s in Auckland followed by the Potts Classic in Hastings on Saturday January 22.
Whanganui will play host to the Cooks Classic on Sunday January 30 followed by the Capital Classic in Wellington on Friday February 4 – which last year memorably witnessed a stunning New Zealand high jump record by Hamish Kerr.
The main change to the summer calendar is the upgrade to Area Permit Meet status of the annual SolaPower Throwers Meet on Saturday February 5.
Held at the SolaPower Throwing Academy in Lower Hutt, the event awarded APM status is rich reward for the passion and enthusiasm of event organiser Shaka Sola, who represented Samoa in discus at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
With no Porritt Classic in Hamilton on the calendar for 2022 because of track renovation work the Continental Tour Bronze meets in Auckland and Christchurch will form the climax to the major one-day competitions of the forthcoming New Zealand domestic season.
The Sir Graeme Douglas International in Auckland takes place on Sunday February 20 followed by the International Track Meet in Christchurch on Saturday February 26.
The Jennian Homes Track & Field Championships are scheduled to take place in Hastings on March 4-6.
Athletics NZ Competitions Manager Jason Cameron said: “It’s exciting that our athletes can build their season with the Oceania Area Permit Meets in early summer followed by the World Athletics Continental Tour meets in late summer. The events all provide valuable competitive and points earning opportunities ahead of the climax of the summer season – the Jennian Homes New Zealand Track & Field Champs in Hastings.”
