AUCKLAND
McKinnon Shield #6 and Auckland 5000m Championships, Mt Smart Stadium – 16 January 2021
Zoe Hobbs scorched to a fresh New Zealand resident 100m record of 11.35 +1.1, clipping two hundredths of a second off her own record set at the 2019 Potts Classic.

The four times national 100m champion was in control throughout heading in Symone Tafunai who clocked a legal personal best of 11.89.

Hobbs said that it was good to get her first race underway for 2021.

“It has given me a bit of confidence moving into the rest of the season seeing the work finally come together and I’m definitely hoping for more after this,” she said.

“I’m glad to be here today, it gives me the race practice that I wanted moving into Potts. That is why I’m here today, so I’m stoked to come away with the bonus of a resident record as well.”

Michelle Seymour holds the New Zealand national record of 11.32 set in Melbourne in 1993.

Portia Bing also opened her 2021 season with a pleasing 400m hurdles of 57.57. Starting in an almost full field which included Justin Menezes on the outside lane Bing had plenty of competition, but managed to edge ahead of Menezes who ran a PB of 57.86.

Bing said that she has made a number of changes since the nationals in Christchurch last year.

“I was living in Australia and training over there and I’ve come back and started training with James Mortimer, and clearly things seem to be working really well.

“We’ve started to address the technical issues which is something we have never looked at before. World champs 2019 was a very clear red flag for us, hey you’re fast enough but you can’t hurdle good enough yet, so we’ve started implementing 14 strides so I need to allow myself that extra room and through that we’ve had to lift the speed and change hurdle technique to be able to hurdle both left and right competently,” said Bing.

“Today’s focus was to get out there and run, as the hardest thing is starting. From here on things tend to get better and the races get easier, so I was really happy with that and able to come into a race with a plan. After three years of hurdling I turn up to a comp with a plan,” she added.

Her next outing over the hurdles will be at the Cooks Classic.

Bing later competed in the 200m, finishing second in 24.28. Georgia Hulls won in 24.08 +2.3.

Jordan Bolland won the 100m in 10.79 +1.4 from Zachary Saunders 10.81 and Mogammad Smith 10.84. Tommy Te Puni was a DQ after a false start but he later went on to win the 200m in 21.62 +2.3 from Saunders 21.73.

Anthony Nobilo had the hammer out to 61.43m and Tom Moloney cleared the high jump at a PB 2.00m. Kaelan Paranihi triple jump 13.23m +3.5 also a back-up of 13.08m +1.3.

Stella Pearless ran an even paced 800m in 2:12.71 to win from Joanna Poland 2:13.07. Harrison Porritt won the men’s 800m in 1:58.51 narrowly from Matthew Taylor who recorded 1:58.55.

In the women’s hammer throw personal bests went to Nadja Kumerich 42.68m, Caitlin Shepperson 42.40mm and Suluam Vaeau-Mulitalo 39.59m.

Diana Ismagilova TJ 12.11m +1.5. Josie Taylor HJ 1.72m.

In the Auckland 5000m championships, personal best times were recorded by the first three to finish in the women’s; Ainsley Thorpe 16:33.29, Kelly Parlane 17:45.05 and Bella Earl (15) 17:57.40. Ronan Lee held on from a late bid from Louis Young to win the men’s 5000m in 15:31.41, Young recording a PB 15:32.93. Sam Waldin was third in 15:40.43. In the masters 45-49 Nick Moore ran a 10 second PB of 15:40.90. Michele Allison of Wellington Scottish won the master women 65-69 in 21:34.78.

TAURANGA
Waikato Bay of Plenty Open Meeting, Tauranga Domain – 16 January 2021
Connor Bell came within 27cm of the New Zealand resident discus record with a personal best throw of 63.30m with the 2kg discus. The national junior champion and former Commonwealth Youth and Youth Olympic champion improved 5cm on his previous best from last year’s Potts Classic. National champion Alexander Parkinson was second with 58.92m. Ian Winchester holds the resident record of 63.57m set in Hamilton in 1998.

Maddison-Lee Wesche had her sixth best ever shot put of 17.60m.

Savannah Scheen threw a PB 54.48m in the women’s discus, a 1.73m improvement on her second placing at last year’s national junior championship. Her latest effort elevates her to seventh on the New Zealand women’s all-time list.

South Island Colgate Games, Saxton Athletics Track – 15/17 January 2021
Nearly 900 athletes from 71 different clubs converged on the Saxton Field Sports Complex for three days of track and field competition.

Established in 1978, the Colgate Games is one of the longest continuous sports sponsorships in New Zealand and is New Zealand’s largest athletics competition for athletes aged 7 to 14 years old.
