New Zealand Cross Country and Track & Field results

AUCKLAND

Pakuranga Cross Country, Lloyd Elsmore Park – 16 July 2022
New Zealand secondary schools champion and runner up in the national U18 championship Christian De Vaal made light work of the muddy conditions to win the 8km in 28:42. Former Otago runner Toby Batchelor was second in 29:23 followed in by Ronan Codyre 30:11, Jamie Mora 30:26, Nick Moore 30:51, Robbie van Deursen 31:09 and Jahko Tohaia 31:13.

Karen Donaldson-Barron was the first woman in 35:41 with Bethany Bromfield second in 37:06 and Rachel Penney third in 37:38.

In the 4km event James Trathen led in 17:59, from Tiago Koch, who has emigrated from Brazil, in 19:27 and Christian Geldenhuys 19:46. Amelia Joyce ran a superb race to head in the women in 18:46 from Hannah McManus 19:23.
It was a true cross country course, which was waterlogged, muddy with creek crossings and hurdles to negotiate.

ROTORUA

Waikato Bay of Plenty Cross Country Championships, Ray Boord Park – 16 July 2022
National cross country champion Kerry White made it three years in a row in winning the senior women’s 10km title. White covered the course in an impressive time of 37:18.

Ben Bidois won the men’s title in 33:08 from Michael Sutton 33:11.

World Athletics Championships, Hayward Field, Eugene OR, 15-24 July:

Eddie Osei-Nketia broke his father Gus’ New Zealand national 100m record of 10.11 with a semi-final qualifying time of 10.08 in the heats.

Eddie was over the moon on seeing the time on the scoreboard as he took the stairs leaving the track.

“Getting my dad’s record was a beautiful moment. It’s unbelievable, it’s unreal, it just felt like a dream.”

Zoe Hobbs further bettered her New Zealand national record in the heats of the 100m clocking 11.08. It is the seventh time she has equalled or broken the national 100m record since March 2021. And has now broken Australian Melissa Breen’s 2014 Oceania record of 11.11 twice, with 11.09 in Mackay last month and now 11.08.

Maddison-Lee Wesche set a personal best shot put of 19.50m in finishing seventh in the final.

Tom Walsh was fourth in the final of the shot put and Jacko Gill was seventh.
