A Silver medal to Aitchison who was locked in a titanic tussle with Yiting Shi. Aitchison just could not quite manage to overhaul the Chinese athlete as Shi prevailed by a margin of just 0.14 in a Paralympic record time of 27.50.
“It was definitely a hard race, I felt strong coming out of the blocks and on the home straight I was neck and neck with Shi, it was a serious race. I was a bit disappointed with the last five metres and got really fatigued. I’m feeling tired I had a late night (after the evening heats) and didn’t get to bed until this morning. I am happy with the time, which was great,” said Aitchison.
Ultra Trail Mt Blanc, Chamonix – 26 August/1 September:
UTMB (176km 9,915m+), 31 Aug/1 Sept: Ruth Croft 22:48:37 (2), Katie Schide (USA) won in 22:09:31. Nancy Jiang was 28th in 30:12:26.
After almost making it to the UTMB start line last year only to be thwarted by illness just days before the race, Croft was excited to make her UTMB debut this year and was determined to enjoy her experience.
“My build up this year was a lot better compared to last year, I didn’t make the start line last year because I got sick the week before but this year I felt really strong, partly due to my coach, Scott Johnson, and just mentally pretty relaxed to be honest. I tried not to take it too seriously and just wanted to try and have as much fun as you can over 170 kilometres,” said Croft.
“I think it’s slightly psychotic [to run 170km) but for the most part I did have quite a lot of fun. There were a few low patches, the first 50km, but after that, things started to pick up.”
