New Zealand Mountain Running Championships and centre road championships

QUEENSTOWN

New Zealand Mountain Running Championships, Deer Park Heights – 20 August 2022
Training over the Port Hills of Christchurch paid dividends for Cameron Avery (Christchurch Avon) as he shot up the 8.6km 500m climb to win his first national title.

The 25-year-old had the measure of the field over the second half collecting the gold medal in 36:10. Avery was the national junior 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m champion in 2016.

Toby Batchelor (Pakuranga) was second in 37:00 with Tim Robertson of Hutt Valley Harriers third in 37:17. Daniel Balchin was fourth followed in by Andy Good and Michael Sutton.

Sarah Douglas (Queenstown Athletics), twice previous champion, collected the senior women’s crown in 47:06. The 38-year-old finished almost three minutes clear of Jessica Campbell (Sumner) with her club-mate Kate Morrison claiming bronze in 51:13.

Oliver O’Sullivan (Hill City) 35-39  led in the master men 8.6km in 41:19 from Kelvin Meade (St Pauls) 40-44 in 42:29 and Dwight Grieve (Fiordland) 45-49 in 42:41. David Kettles of Wellington Scottish won the master men 50 plus 5.8km in 29:52.

Bridget Deverell (Hamilton City Hawks) in the 50 plus age group was the first master woman covering the 5.8km climb in 33:50. Georgia Pakeho of Hill City University AC 45-49 was next home in 38:22.

In the U20 5.8km championship, Benjamin Rickerby won the men in 26:50 from James McLeay and Ben Scott. Siena Mackley of Queenstown collected the women’s gold with Sophie Robb taking the silver and Kennedy Taylor the bronze.

AUCKLAND

Auckland Road Championships, Bruce Pulman Park Papakura – 21 August 2022
Jamie Mora ran faster than the New Zealand U17 6km record of 18:52 in winning the U18 title. He won in 18:50, 1:15 ahead of clubmates James Trathen and Connor Jamieson.

In adding the road title to the Auckland U18 cross country title won in June, Mora, 16, was two seconds under the U17 record currently jointly held by Jacob Priddey and Zane Powell.

Jack Paine also made it a double for the season following up his cross country crown with the senior 10km road title in 31:51. Marek Schirnack was second in 31:58 and William Harris third. Former Canterbury runner Jason Hunt was fourth in a PB 32:40.

Simon Mace in finishing second overall in 31:55 PB in the combined senior and masters race broke the New Zealand masters 45-49 10km road record of 32:39 held by Daniel Clendon of Wellington.

Maiya Christini won the women’s 10km in 36:26, over two minutes ahead of Olivia Gold with a further two minutes to Emily Register.

Karen Donaldson-Barron headed in the master women over 5km in a PB 17:52. Amelia Green won the U20 5km in 18:10, the U18 5km went to Sophie Robb in 17:37, Imogen Barlow won the U16 4km in 13:57 and Leah Marais took out the U14 3km in 10:37.

Quinn Moss won the U16 4km in 13:18 from Ben Oxford 13:32 and Louay Benaoum continued his winning way in the U14 3km clocking 10:08.

CAMBRIDGE

Waikato Bay of Plenty Road Championships, Swayne Road – 21 August 2022
While Jamie Mora was running 18:50 in Auckland, Elliott Pugh, 16, and George Wyllie, 15, were battling out the U18 Waikato Bay of Plenty 6km championship. Pugh won in 18:38 and Wyllie was second in 18:41 both times under the national U17 record. While they were better than the existing record an application may not be submitted as it was raced over a non-certified course.

Ben Bidois won the senior 10km title in 31:26 from Josiah Ney 32:04.

FIELDING

Manawatu Wanganui Road Championships, Manfeild Raceway – 20 August 2022
The highlight was the win to Sally Gibbs (now Wanganui Harriers) in competing in the senior women’s 10km. Her time of 36:50 broke her own 2018 New Zealand masters 55-59 record of 37:00. She was followed in by Ellen Schaef (PNAHC) 37:46 and Stephanie Walker (Feilding Moa) 41:22.

Luke Scott won the senior men’s 10km in 31:29 from Damien Lardner 32:09 and Jamie Dennis 33:11. Nelson Doolan won the U20 grade, also running 10km, in 33:13.

Wellington Road Championships, Wainuiomata – 20 August 2022
Hirotaka Tanimoto won the senior 10km and masters 35-39 in a personal best time of 31:08. This cut 50 seconds off his winning time at the 2016 championships. Daniel Jones was second in 31:33, followed in by Thomas Strawbridge 32:30 and Sam McCutcheon 32:31.

Sarah Drought won the women’s 10km title in 35:45 from Genevieve Coffey 37:23 and Mel Brandon 37:40.

CHRISTCHURCH

Canterbury Road Championships, Burwood Forest – 20 August 2022
Jonah Cropp (17) the national U18 3000m and 5000m race walking champion bettered the New Zealand U18, U19 and U20 record by one second in winning the U18 5km race walk in 23:45. Lucas Martin set the existing record in November 2020. Laura Langley won the senior women’s 10km race walk in 52:23.

Mike Phillips narrowly won the senior men 10km title in 31:34 from Ieuan van der Peet 31:35 and Corban Straker 31:38. Olivia Ritchie ran a PB 35:36 to win the senior women’s title from Annabelle Bramwell 37:23 and Julia Grant 37:38. Master men 10km Mathew Wiseman 33:07, Alex Kelliher 33:38. Master women 5km 40 Annie Radecki 19:55, 45 Lisa Brignull 20:08. U20 5km Saskia Cosgrove Drayton 19:03, U18 Kate Currie 19:14.
