McKinnon Shield Meeting #3, Mt Smart Stadium – 21 November 2020
National pole vault champion Imogen Ayris soared to a new personal best pole vault of 4.50m, a 20cm improvement on her 4.30m at the Canberra Track Classic in February. Ayris (19) moves from fifth to second on the New Zealand women’s all-time list, behind Eliza McCartney’s 4.94m. Olivia McTaggart went close to her best with a clearance of 4.40m and Jessica Strick achieved a PB of 3.45m. James Steyn was over at 5.00m and Ettiene Du Preez 4.90m.
In the highlight of the junior action, 12-year-old Troy Maka launched the 1kg discus 50.19m – a phenomenal throw for a boy of his age. This backs up his equally impressive feat the previous year of throwing the 750g discus 50.89m in the U-11 age group.
Hamish Gill again dominated the sprints with 6.82 +2.0 over 60m and 10.46 +2.7 in the 100m. Bailey Stewart just held on to win the 400m in 49.20 from James Robertson 49.69 PB. Oliver Miller, national 400m and 400m hurdles champion last year, debuted over the senior 110m hurdles in 15.08 +3.9.
Symone Tafunai won the women’s 60m 7.51 +3.0 and the 100m 11.84 +2.8. Hinewai Knowles recorded 14.52 +0.8 in the .0838m 100m hurdles and later finished third in the 100m in 12.38. Isabel Allen, second in last season’s national under 18 400m championship, scored a PB 400m of 57.05, and Amelie Fairclough with 57.15 and Kate Borton with 57.31 also went under their previous bests.
Zoe Taylor, second in the national junior 100m and long jump, won the long jump with 5.74m +3.6 and her back up legal jump of 5.59m +1.6 was a personal best. Taylor had earlier finished third in the 100m hurdles in 15.38.
In a solo effort, national junior race walking champion Antonia Martin achieved a personal best of 16:38.63 in the 3000m race walk.

Twice national high jump champion Keeley O’Hagan equalled her personal best high jump of 1.85m. Her previous clearance at this height was back in 2015 when she finished third in the Australian championships. The 26-year-old, who has been runner up at the last two national championships, now heads this year’s New Zealand rankings. Josie Taylor was second on Saturday with 1.80m and Josephine Reeves also cleared 1.80m.
