CHRISTCHURCH

New Zealand Road Relay Championships, Bottle Lake Forest Park, Waitakari – 1 October 2022
University of Canterbury retained the national senior men’s relay title and North Harbour Bays retained the senior women’s crown. Canterbury led from the second lap in the 8 x 8km relay to make it title number eight. Bays also led after lap two notching up their eleventh title.

Matthew Taylor running the second fastest 8km of 23:28 had Bays in front at the first change, but with a leg of 24:09 Chris Dryden propelled Canterbury into the winning position on lap two which was maintained by Harry Rattray, Jack Staples, Cameron Swales, Tom Moulai, Oska Baynes and anchored home by Daniel Balchin. They won by over three minutes from Whippets. In a close run for the bronze medals, Cameron Avery ran a blinder of 22:58 on the last lap for Christchurch Avon to overhaul Pakuranga for the honours.

Esther George headed in the women’s teams after an opening lap of 28:28 for Wellington Harriers. Their lead was short lived after Olivia Whitney with the fastest overall women’s time of 26:50 brought Bays to the fore and Brigid Dennehy, Niamh de Hóra, Laura Nagel, Maddie Dillon, Charlotte Floodsmith-Ryan and Jessie Speedy steadily increased their winning margin out to over six minutes ahead of second placed Whippets. University of Canterbury were third.

Takapuna who last won the master men’s title in Kumeu in 1998, collected the gold ahead of Owairaka and Wellington Scottish. Don Greig Racing Stables received their first title winning the master women, ahead of Wellington Scottish. Scottish went four titles in a row in taking out the master men’s 50 plus title, Christchurch Avon won the 60 plus and Wellington Harriers won the inaugural 70 plus title. Scottish went three in a row in the master women 50 plus.

Pakuranga retained the junior men’s title and Olympic Wellington the junior women’s.

Wellington Scottish won the top Club award, for the fourth time in a row and now 15 times since the inaugural top Club award in 2001.
