AUCKLAND

End of Year Throws, AUT Millennium Stadium, North Shore – 29 December 2022

Four times national hammer throw champion Anthony Nobilo saw the year out in fine style with a 51cm PB hammer throw of 68.25m.

TAURANGA

New Year Twilight Meeting, Tauranga Domain – 1 January 2023

Connor Bell had the perfect start to 2023 adding 2cm to his PB with a throw of 64.31m. His series was 60.40, 63.46, 64.31, 62.89, 60.13 and 64.15. The 21- year-old twice national champion set the New Zealand resident record of 64.29m two years ago in Hastings, and that mark will still stand as the New Zealand resident record because his 64.31m was not measured with a steel tape.

Bell said he wasn’t expecting to throw as far and hadn’t indicated a steel tape was needed.

“A PB 64m this time of year is really a good sign of what is to come. I’m really happy as to how it’s going.

“It’s a pretty good season opener, and I’m totally recovered from the broken ankle in November 2021. It’s an indication of where we are at going into the season and I think we’re in a good space building into the next couple of competitions.”

He added that he not peaked for the Tauranga event.

“I’m still in moderate training, building some strength for after March when I go overseas for a couple of target meets. That’s when I’ll start coming into shape.

“The next thing on the chopping board is that national record of 65.03m.”

Bell will compete in Hastings at the throwers meeting on 18 January and then the Potts Classic three days later.

“And then on to the ITM meeting in Christchurch and nationals in Wellington,” he said.
