NATIONAL RESULTS

AUCKLAND

Sir Graeme Douglas International, World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze, Douglas Track & Field Henderson – 9 February 2025

Tiaan Whelpton relished the perfect conditions, racing on the back straight, to claim the New Zealand resident 100m record outright clocking 10.10. This betters the time of 10.18 that he set on three occasions and shared with Joseph Millar.

“That was awesome, the conditions were amazing. I just wish I could’ve executed a bit better with these conditions, but my first 100 of the season and that was a hell of a way to kick it off with a PB,” said Whelpton.

“So it’s only up from here, that national record (10.08) is in my sights,” he added.

Fifteen-year-old running sensation from Tauranga Sam Ruthe continued to rewrite the record books with a stunning finish over the final 50m of the 1500m. Ruthe timed his finish to perfection racing through on the inside to claim second in 3:41.25 to claim the New Zealand under 17 and under 18 records. This time is now the fastest ever in the world by a 15 year old, eclipsing Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s time of 3:42.44 in 2016.

Ruthe erased Dallas Bowden’s 3:46.98 2007 under 17 time and Isaiah Priddey’s 3:44.34 2018 under 18 record.

As well as Whelpton’s 100m meeting record, Lui Kitada of Japan equalled the pole vault meeting record of 5.32m and Sae Takemoto of Japan set a women’s javelin throw meeting record of 60.51m.

Ellie Beer of Australia who set a meeting record of 51.77 last year in the 400m returned for another impressive victory in 52.40. Madeleine Waddell (17) in third in 53.16 set New Zealand under 18, 19 and 20 400m records. The national junior 400m and 400m hurdles champion broke her own under 18 record of 53.50 set at the World Junior Championships in Peru last August and bettered Joanna Hickman’s under 19 and under 20 record of 53.42 set in Christchurch in 1975. Waddell now holds all four age group 400m records.

Liam Adcock was out to a wind assisted 8.21m in the long jump. Adcock did not register a legal jump in his series and as such retains the meeting record of 8.05m +1.1 set in 2023.

In their first meet of the season Jacko Gill and Tom Walsh delighted the crowd trading throws in the shot put. Gill won by nearly a metre with a toss of 21.85m.

Bree Masters improved on her winning time of 11.36 last year taking out the women’s 100m again in 11.23. Laura Nagel came from behind to claim the women’s 1500m in 4:17.58 outkicking Saki Katagihara of Japan.

Mitch Joynt set a New Zealand Para Athlete T64 100m record of 11.82. The New Zealand 400m record continued to elude Lex Revell-Lewis. Racing against Australians Cooper Sherman and Terrell Thorne Revell-Lewis came home in third in 46.39, just off Shaun Farrell’s 1998 record of 46.09.
