McKinnon Shield #7, Mt Smart Stadium – 11 January 2025

Lex Revell-Lewis followed up a wind-assisted 100m in 10.39 with his second-best 400m of 46.22. He was a tenth of a second outside his best and knocked on the door of the New Zealand record of 46.09. But he may have had a crack at the record for the windy conditions.

“There was a big wind on the first 100m. I had run the 100m earlier with a tail wind and I saw green after that race and it was playing on my mind a bit in the 400m, so I didn’t go out as hard as I should have,” said Revell-Lewis.

His next 400m will be at the Capital Classic meeting in Wellington on January 29.

“Hopefully that will give me some good ranking points for the Tokyo World Championships.”

Zoe Hobbs in her first 100m since racing in New York in September, had an impressive season opener with a wind assisted 11.21 after earlier winning the 60m in 7.15.

Mark Lett improve by one centimetre on his New Zealand masters M60 pole vault record clearing 3.21m.

Sam Ruthe continued his amazing series of runs as a fifteen year old winning the 38th edition of the annual Sir John Walker junior mile in 4:10.43. Ruthe led throughout heading in Waikato Bay of Plenty team mates Hamish Murray and Jake Lomas.

Ruthe said that he was wanting to run an even race.

“So I took off a bit slower than I wanted to be, about a 63, and I just managed to hold it. Hamish, my training partner, pushed me a bit and made it a real nice race,” he said, adding It was just a bit windy.

“I’ll be doing the mile at the Cooks Classic in Wanganui (on January 25), where I’ll be trying to go sub 4:05 hopefully. I hope it’s not as windy there.”

Lisa Hellyer won the third annual Millie Sampson women’s under 23 mile debuting over the distance in 4:56.49.
