McKinnon Shield #6, Mt Smart Stadium – 14 December 2024
The wind at Mt Smart tends to play tricks with Tommy Te Puni. On a perfectly calm day, with earlier races recording legal winds, Te Puni’s 100m victory in 10.34 came with a following wind of 2.7.
He was back in action later in the programme winning the 200m in a legal 20.77. Zachary Saunders was second on both occasions in 10.58 and 21.27.
Matthew Alty went under two minutes for the first time in the 800m in 1:58.46 in finishing second to Daniel Hayes who won in a debut 1:53.87.
Camryn Smart, national 400m champion in 2021 and third in last season’s nationals, debuted over 800m with an impressive run of 2:12.68. Leah Marais (14) cut five seconds off her previous best, finishing second in 2:17.45.
Livvy Wilson won the 100m in 11.81 from Hastings athlete Kiana Pohe, who recorded a PB 12.22. Alana Mathews set her best time of 16:41.69 in the 3000m race walk.
Estelle Short from the Cook Islands sprinted to a career-best of 25.59 in the 200m, with Sienna Moyle also setting her best of 25.62 in the second.
In the long jump, Cleo Loader was out to her best of 5.49m while there was much jubilation, with Paddy Walsh setting a Para Athlete T64 national record of 4.71m.

Fifteen-year-old Sam Ruthe did it again, breaking his New Zealand under 17 and 18 3000m record set just over three weeks ago. Racing in the open senior race he finished 13th in 8:06.56, cutting three seconds off his previous time.
David Lee ran a PB 3000m of 7:55.71 as did Catherine Lund with 9:40.36.
Oli Chignell was a credible third in the feature event the 10,000m in 28:35.08.
