Obituary
Former prominent athletic coach and administrator Doug McClymont passed away in Rotorua on 8 August 2024 aged 80.
He competed in athletics at Waitaki Boys’ High School and later competed as a sprinter, hurdler, pole vaulter, long jumper and thrower as a member of the Winton Athletics Club. He also coached in all these events at various locations, Napier/Hastings, Dunedin, Timaru, Oamaru, Leeston and Christchurch. He was the national pole vault coach and published a pole vault magazine. Among the athletes he coached was 13 times New Zealand pole vault champion Melina Hamilton.
McClymont received a teaching diploma and first taught at Southland Boys’ High School before moving to Canada where he obtained a PE degree from the University of Alberta studying health and physical education and fitness. He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and adventure building and maintaining worldwide connections as a biomechanics teacher and sports coach.
He was the pole vault coach with the New Zealand athletic team at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games and did a stint as chief administrative officer with Cayman Islands Rugby. From 2006 to 2010 he taught at International Schools in Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan.
For six years from 1988 to 1994 he was a NZAAA track and field selector. Fellow selector Dave Norris welcomed his sensible,
generous yet realistic attitude. “His friendly nature and sense of humour made him easy to work with. His sharp mind made him a very good selector,” Norris remembers. John Tylden remembers him as a very capable and motivating coach with excellent skills across all the disciplines and was particularly passionate about pole vault. He was a coach with teams to the World University Games, including in Buffalo in 1993. McClymont was a coach with the New Zealand team at the 1994 World Junior Championships in Lisbon. Alec McNab who was the manager of the trips to Buffalo and Lisbon said he was an outstanding coach and a tremendous team coach. He was awarded a NZSSAA service award in 2018.
