Obituary

Former national pole vault champion and record holder Peter Tracy of Cambridge died on 5 December 2024 from a heart condition aged 69.

Tracy was in the St Paul’s Collegiate athletic team and a member of the Hamilton Athletic Club.

He won the national junior pole vault title for three years from 1972, the national senior high jump title in 1973 and the senior pole vault in 1974.

Tracy set a national record of 4.55m in the pole vault in Victoria Canada in July 1973 and went on to break his own record five times over the next two years.
He was the first New Zealand athlete to receive an American athletics scholarship, being accepted by the University of El Paso Texas. It was there that he set his last national record of 5.20m in March 1976.

That record stood for the next 14 years, till Simon Poelman cleared 5.22m in March 1990.

Tracy represented New Zealand at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games where he was fifth in the pole vault.

Described by Peter Heidenstrom in ‘Athletes of the Century’ as having the ideal physique for vaulting, “strongly built, perfectly co-ordinated and a right spring heel”.
