Whanganui
PAK’nSave Cooks Classic, World Athletics Continental Bronze Event, Cooks Gardens – 25 January 2025
Sam Tanner collected his fourth national mile title running the 78th sub four minute miles at Cooks Gardens and his fifth sub four at the iconic venue. Tanner was home comfortably in 3:55.75, leading in Australian Jack Bruce, who recorded the 79th sub-four of 3:56.90. Jaryd Clifford of Australia just missed going under the barrier in third in 4:00.45. Tanner has now run 12 sub-four-minute miles.
Sam Ruthe continues to amaze, coming in next in 4:01.72, the fastest time in the world for a 15-year-old. He betters Evan Grime of UK who ran 4:05.48 in Bury Manchester in August last year. Ruthe was through 1500m in 3:46.41, four seconds outside Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s world’s best time of 3:42.44 as a 15-year-old.
Australians went one, two in the women’s mile with Linden Hall winning in 4:35.28, from Izzy Thornton-Bott in 4:39.84. The New Zealand title went to third-placed Alison Andrews-Paul from Brigid Dennehy and Tillie Hollyer.
Sally Gibbs set a New Zealand masters W60 mile record of 5:43.97, breaking her own record of 5:45.11 set at Cooks Garden last year.
2024 World U20 champion Ethan Olivier set the only meeting and stadium record, improving on Tom Davie’s 2004 triple jump record of 15.43m with a jump of 16.60m.
Paris Olympics high jump gold medallist Hamish Kerr opened his season clearing 2.19m. He cleared 2.06m and 2.14m on his first attempt, 2.19m on his second and was unsuccessful at his three attempts at 2.24m.
Lauren Bruce was a double winner in the field, throwing the hammer 67.48m and tossing the shot 13.15m.
Local Jonathan Maples eclipsed his previous best 400m hurdles time of 52.71 at the Oceania Championships in Suva last June with a winning time of 52.05. His sister Lexi Maples was second in the hammer throw.

South Island Masters Championships, Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub – 24/26 January 2025
There were around 30 new South Island records made, and the New New Zealand records included:
Todd Bates M30 (Otago) made a new weight throw record of 15.90m before he sped off to do his police duties. He also won the hammer with a throw of 53.29m.
Fiona Harvey (Otago)W 65 made a new javelin record of 22.50 easily beating the past record of 19.39 with three of her throws being over 21m. Fiona was thrilled with this result in her favourite throwing event as she could not remember how many years it was since she last threw 22metres.
Colleen Malloney W85 ( Canterbury) made a new record in the weight throw of 7.68m and a total of 2277 in her weight pentathlon. Her hammer throw of 17.80m during her pentathlon also passed the previous NZ distance of 17.29m.
The 1500m Race Walk has only been a championship event since 2022 so record times are still named best performances not records.
Walkers making BP’s for their 1500 walks included Dalise Sanderson (Otago) W65 with 11:18.08 , David Smyth M55 ( Canterbury) with 8:53.59 and John Jarvis M45 ( Canterbury) with 11:16.00.
South Island record breakers included….
Jim Blair M90 making a SB and new javelin record of 18.40m breaking his own record made in 2021.
Keith Hutton M75 making new records in his new age group in the 300 hurdles (1:03.05) and high jump( 1.10m) Rozie Robinson W30 making new walking records in her 3000m ( 17:43.34) and 5000m ( 31:51.86) walks.
Helena Dinissen W40 running very strongly winning all four sprints after a two year absence making a record of 8.22 in her 60m.
Joden Pratten M40 was out to 36.90m with the 2kg discus. Anna Lynch W35 threw the 4kg hammer 39.11m and 38.00m.
