National 10km Road Championships, Levels Raceway, Timaru – 26 October 2024
National 5000m champion William Little added the New Zealand 10km road title with a convincing win in atrocious weather conditions clocking a personal best 29:33.
Sam Tanner set the pace for the first 8km, before bowing out of the race, leaving Little to carry on for victory. National Cross country champion Connor Melton was second in 29:41 and Taonga Mbambo third with 29:54, both career bests.
Little said that it was an awesome race, in beating a class field. “Everyone was worried about the wind and the rain today, but I just approached it as a race I don’t care what the time is I’m just going to sit in there and race it.
“At 5km I said to Sam (Tanner) that we’ve really got to go, and with 1500m to go Sam turned to me and said ‘it’s all yours’,” said Little who now looks forward to the Zatopek 10k and the Night of 5’s.
National women’s steeplechase champion Eva Pringle proved too strong for the national 5km road champion Laura Nagel. Pringle recorded a PB and course record of 34:00m, clipping 11s off Katherine Camp’s 2022 record. Nagel also posted a PB of 34:02.
Pringle said that she enjoyed the race.
“It was fun just to get out here and try 10ks. I feel as if I was relaxed trying it as I wasn’t the top dog, and I didn’t have any pressure which is nice.
“George (Guerin) was running in front of us, so I stayed behind him and he was my motivation to go as he was pulling away from our little group.
“I was so excited to see the 8k sign and just knowing I only had 2k to run home. I knew Laura has such a good kick so I wanted to go with 2k left.
“it was pure fear of Laura coming that drove me home,” said Pringle.
New Zealand masters 10km records were set by Andy Good M35 30:34, Nick Moore M50 33:18 and Peter Richards M65 39:43.
Laura Langley was first woman home in the 10km race walk finishing third overall in a personal best time.
“I was hoping to go under 47 and a half at the start of the summer season, so to do 47:14 was great. I was stoked to have a race against two of those boys out there, Lucas and Toby. I was hoping to beat them both, but couldn’t quite get Lucas,” said Langley who is targeting the Australian and Oceania 20km race walking championship in Adelaide in February.
Jonah Cropp won in 44:55 from Lucas Martin 47:09 and Toby O’Rorke47:35.
Cropp was pleased with his time.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better time, in absolutely horrid conditions, the weather was atrocious,” he said.

The Whippets Running Project dominated the club team races, taking both men’s and women’s titles, with Run Timaru finishing second in the women’s event and Fielding Moa finishing second in the men’s events. Canterbury won the men’s centre team title, followed by Wellington and Otago, and also secured the women’s title as the sole competing team.
Despite the conditions a successful event with a number of personal bests recorded.
