Red Stag 61st Annual Rotorua Marathon, Government Gardens – 3 May 2025

Daniel Balchin held out Cullern Thorby by two seconds to win the iconic marathon in 2:24:41. Balchin (34) now adds the Rotorua victory to his wins in the Christchurch and Auckland marathons. The eleven times national champion over four events has a best time of 2:15:55 from his national title in Christchurch in 2022. He also won the national title in the 2023 Christchurch marathon.

Balchin was neck and neck with Thorby for almost the entire lap of the Lake.

“Neither of us could really drop the other”, said Balchin.

“I managed to get a break on him in the last kilometre and hold on to that to the finish”, he added.

Local runner Michael Voss, winner at Rotorua last year and 2024 national champion was third in 2:26:52.

Billie-Lee Haresnape, third in 2022 in 3:06:09, was the first woman in 3:03:49. Also in 2022 Haresnape finished the sixth woman in the Ironman New Zealand in Taupo.

This year’s event had a new finish line in the heart of the newly redeveloped Rotorua Lakefront precinct with the final stretch down Eat Streat and finishing outside the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside.

A big crowd lined the finish chute and along the city’s dining precinct with restaurant patrons cheering on the runners approaching the finish line.
