Auckland

14th Daikin Night of 5s, AUT Millennium Stadium, North Shore – 21 December 2024

Julian Oakley cut William Little’s bid for victory down the finishing straight, crossing the line in 13:48.34. Little, the current national 5000m champion, clocked a personal best at 13:49.55, in second, as did the next two to finish Toby Gualter at 13:51.73 and David Lee at 13:52.95. It was Oakley’s fourth win at the night of 5’s. He holds the race record of 13:29.74 from the Blincoe Cup race in December 2022.

Laura Nagel claimed her third title at the annual event, in 16:19.87. Anneke Arlidge who won two years ago was second in 16:33.13. Camille French holds the women’s race record of 15:28.78 set in 2015.

Paris Olympic 100m semi-finalist Zoe Hobbs opened her racing season, winning the 200m in a legal 23.50. Hobbs, who has a best of 23.19 in Canberra in 2019, last raced 200m in November 2022 at Pakuranga.

Olivia McTaggart 13th in the pole vault in Paris was over the bar at 4.53m, missing her three attempts at 4.60m.

Joe Martin (17) national under 18 800m bronze medallist and silver medallist in the 1500m, cut two seconds off his recent best 800m in winning the A grade race in 1:50.11. This time ranks Martin number one on the 2024 New Zealand under 18 rankings and he joins his older brother Alex Martin (19) who heads the 2024 under 20 rankings with his time of 1:49.07 set in Texas in April.

Boh Ritchie, national secondary schools champion in 2:05.38, won the women’s A race in 2:07.12. Camryn Smart, who has moved up in distance, further improved on her time, finishing second in 2:09.80.

Chris Waring broke her New Zealand masters W80 100m record of 18.09 with a fresh clocking of 17.91.

Jaxon Woolley (18) clipped a hundredth of a second off his New Zealand Para T38 Open, Under 19 and Under 18 100m record with a time of 12.17. He set the previous record of 12.18 at last season’s Potts Classic in Hastings.

New Year’s Honours

David Richmond of Dunedin received the King’s Service Medal KSM for services to sport, particularly athletics and cricket.

Mr Richmond (Ngāi Tahu) has been involved with sport, particularly athletics and cricket at local, regional, and national levels for more than 50 years.

Mr Richmond first volunteered on the Presbyterian Harrier and Athletics Club Committee from 1967 to 1971, including a year as Secretary. In 1981, he was on the steering committee which merged the club with two others, forming the Hill City Athletics Club (now Hill City-University). He served as Club Captain, President from 1991 to 1993, and as Patron since 2008. He has been involved with Athletics Otago since 1981, serving as a Handicapper, Selector and as President from 1991 to 1994 and 2012 to 2016. He represented Otago as an Athletics New Zealand Councillor from 1991 to 1994 and served on the organisation’s Board of Directors from 1994 to 1999. In 1992 he lobbied for Dunedin to host the National Road Relay Championship, creating the course and chairing the organising committee. He organised the 2004 Secondary Schools National Cross Country in Dunedin. He coached Tokomairiro High School’s athletic, cross country, rugby and cricket teams from 1976 and Bayfield High School teams from 1986. He was convenor of the Athletics New Zealand records committee for 10 years, from 1994 to 2003. He has been an Honorary Statistician for the Otago Cricket Association for over 30 years. Mr Richmond is a Life Member of Athletics Otago and Hill City-University Athletics Club.
