Former world masters sprint champion and world record holder Margaret Peters passed away on Saturday 28 September 2024 aged 90, after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

She won a number of age group titles at various world masters championships, including gold medals in the W65 100m at the 2003 championships in Puerto Rico, in the W70 100m and 200m at the 2005 championships in San Sebastian, Spain, in the W70 100m and 200m in 2007 in Riccione, Italy, and in the W75 100m, 200m and 400m in 2009 in Finland.

Along the way she also won numerous New Zealand and Oceania Masters championship titles. She set world records in the W70 100m of 15.16 +0.6 and in the W70 200m 31.45 +2.0 in March 2004.

New Zealand master records currently held by Peters are W70 100m 15.16 2004, W75 100m 16.03 2009, W65 200m 31.00 1999, W70 200m 31.45 2004, W75 200m 34.55 2009 and W75 400m 87.2 2009.
Originally based in the UK where she had been a British junior representative Peters emigrated to New Zealand and joined the North Harbour Bays Club and was a valued member during the earlier National League meetings.

However once she reached the masters grades she shone, initially winning the 1998 national W60 100m and 200m titles, a second in the W60 200m and third in the 100m at the 1997 world masters championships in Durban and the W60 100m and 200m titles at the 1998 Oceania championships in Hastings. Peters was made a Life Member of the Bays Club in 2016.
