Please note this event will be live streamed on Sky Sport Next. Due to restrictions around the privacy of younger athletes, we will only be live streaming Grade U16 events and above through the Sky Sport Next YouTube channel.

We have received information that the International Association of Ultrarunners (“IAU”) has invited New Zealand to compete in the virtual IAU 6 Hour Global Solidarity Run to be held over the weekend of 29 – 30 August 2020. This virtual competition has been planned by the IAU in the spirit of universal camaraderie and uplifting of the morale during a time where most ultrarunning competitions have been cancelled and postponed.

Each athlete must run at any time in one continuous six-hour block over the weekend of 29 – 30 August 2020 in the NZT time zone. Athletes can run indoors or outdoors but would need to record their performances on one of the many sports platforms like Strava or Garmin. Results would then be verified by Brianna Maynard and John Bowden before being submitted to the IAU on the 1 September 2020.

A bus and a boat ride just to get to the start line of the 2020 Crater Rim Ultra 53KM event (also the 2020 Athletics New Zealand Trail Running Championship) sees runners take on Mt. Herbert (tallest mountain on Banks Peninsula) on through private farmland before passing by the historic Packhorse Hut built in 1914 by Harry Ell as a rest house for a proposed summit route from Christchurch to Akaroa. Competitors then run out to Gebbies Pass before heading up to the Ahuriri Reserve and onto The Crater Rim Trail track.

Sidling around the rim of an extinct volcano (12million years ago) in Christchurch’s Port Hills, this is an intensely scenic, trail running adventure.

To be eligible to compete in the 2020 Athletics New Zealand Trail Running Championships you must be a current competitive member of an Athletics NZ Affiliated Club as of race day. Eligibility of athletes will be checked by Athletics NZ
