Auckland Grand Prix Cross Country #4, Long Bay Regional Park – 23 July 2022
Ronan Lee in a final hit out before the New Zealand Cross Country Championships on Saturday easily won the 4km in 11:50. He finished 13 seconds ahead of Jack Paine with Logan Griffin third in 12:28. Jess Wright won the women’s 4km in 14:02, beating Charlotte Floodsmith-Ryan by five seconds. Jessie Speedy was third 14:14.

Andrew Reese Memorial Relay, Rakahuri Track, Rangiora – 23 July 2022
The Christchurch Avon team of Theo Walker, Finn Woodhouse, Chanel Muir and Corban Straker won the senior men 4x5km relay in 1:06:11. Don Greig Running Stable were second in 1:13:23 with University third in 1:15:26.

Obituary

New Zealand cross country representative in the 1950’s Merv Hellier of Auckland died on Tuesday 19 July 2022 aged 89.

He was second in the 1958 New Zealand six mile championship in Lower Hutt to Barry Magee and third in the 1962 New Zealand marathon championship in Invercargill to Barry Magee and Jeff Julian.

Merv, who was coached by Arthur Lydiard, competed for the Lynndale and Onehunga Clubs and among his notable road race victories were the Onehunga to Auckland event in 1955 and the Great Eastern road race from Pakuranga to Ellerslie in 1956.

He was sixth in the 1957 New Zealand cross country championships in Feilding and was selected for the first New Zealand representative cross country team which competed against Australia in 1957. The pioneering team was Sir Murray Halberg, Jeff Julian, Neville Scott, Kerry Williams, Pat Sidon and Hellier.

Merv’s wife for 64 years Anne was the women’s manager with the New Zealand team to the 1977 World Cross Country Championships in Dusseldorf Germany.
