McKinnon Shield Meeting #3, Mt Smart Stadium – 11 November 2023
Briana Stephenson, 2020 national long jump champion, was impressive over the 100m hurdles with a flawless display clocking a personal best 14.07 +0.9. This betters her 14.53 recorded in Belfast in July. Stephenson was also out to 10.64m with the 4kg shot.

Camryn Smart, national 400m champion in 2021, was sharp over the one lap in 55.84, heading in Mia de Jager 56.39 and Amelie Fairclough 56.45. Smart had earlier finished second in the 100m in a PB 12.12 +1.8.

Abby Goldie now competing for North Harbour Bays collected the sprint double of 60m in 7.57 +0.6 and the 100m in 12.04 +1.8.

Joseph Millar was sharp over 60m in 6.90 +0.5 while Fergus McLeay dominated the 100m in 10.60 +0.4 PB and held out James Ford in the 400m in a PB 47.72, Ford recording 48.03. Joe Dolphin was second in the 100m in 10.79 PB and third in the 400m in 48.65 PB. Lex Revell-Lewis was third in the 100m in 10.81 =PB and Thomas Cowan fourth in the 400m in 48.83 PB.

Catherine Lund set Otago 17, 18, 19 and 20 year 5000m record of 16:46.02 PB, cutting five seconds off her own record set last year. Catherine is aiming for the U20 women’s 5000m at the upcoming Dick Tayler National 10,000m Championships in Dunedin on January 13 2024, celebrating the 50th anniversary of fellow Ariki club member Dick Tayler’s epic 10,000m victory on the opening day of the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.

OBITUARY
Former Athletics New Zealand Board member and Wellington Official Raema Collins passed away on Sunday 29 October 2023 in Palmerston North aged 81.

Raema was on the Board of the then NZAAA and Convenor of the Records Committee for three years from 1988 to 1991. She was on the Women’s Committee for three years from 1987 to 1990.

Raema managed a New Zealand women’s team to the Kagome-Ekiden Road Relay in Barcelona Spain in December 1989.

She was President of the Wellington Centre and Vice-President of Athletics NZ 1991-93. She served on the committee of the Kiwi Athletic Club from 1984 to 2001 and was known for her fundraising abilities to assist teams to national championships and the resurfacing of the track at Newtown Park. Her passion and interest in athletics started while at Horowhenua College, Levin where she was a school sprint champion.
She was an official at Newtown Park during the 1980’s and 1990’s sharing the announcing duties with Roger Robinson. She completed the announcing when Wellington hosted national championships and other significant events.

Her son Andrew Collins was the national 400m champion in 1987 and competed at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games in the 4 x 400m relay along with Darren Dale, Anthony Green and Dale McClunie finishing fourth.
