49th New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships and 7th Regional Cross Country Teams, Sport and Rugby Institute Manawatu Campus, Massey – 17/18 June 2023

The two Daniels battled it out for the senior boys’ title and Catherine Lund followed up her fine showing at the World Cross Country Championships with a convincing victory in the senior girls event.

Daniel Prescott of St Thomas of Canterbury and Daniel Sinclair of Whanganui Collegiate, tested each other out over the first laps of the 2km circuit working out the respective strengths and weaknesses. Daniel Prescott proved the stronger securing his winning break on the uphill during the final lap. He finished with a strong sprint to complete the 6km in 19:02, five seconds ahead of Daniel Sinclair.

Elliott Pugh of Bethlehem, who was 39th at the World Cross Country Championships in February, was third in 19:17 with Jamie Mora putting in a solid second half effort, to finish fourth in 19:27. Ritchie, the 2021 year nine winner and last year’s junior champion, was second in 14:28 with 2021 junior champion Ava Sutherland of Wellington Girls’ third in 14:37. Wellington Girls’ won both the three and six person team events.

Ben Oxford of Macleans was all class in the junior 4km outgunning last year’s year nine winner Rongotai’s Desmond Reddy by 10 seconds. Corban Holmes of Bethlehem College was third in 13:26. Harry Witheridge in ninth place lead Westlake Boys’ to victory by one point over Wellington College in the three person teams. Westlake also won the six person teams.

Madison Wos of Sacred Heart Wellington just held on to win the year nine girls from fast finishing Paige Dobson of Napier Girls’. Diocesan won the three teams and St Peter’s the six person teams.
