At the same meeting Jakob Ingebrigtsen Norway set a world record of 7:17.55 in the 3000m, over three seconds faster than Kenya’s Daniel Komen’s 1996 record of 7:20.67 and Mondo Duplantis of Sweden improved on his pole vault world record to 6.26m adding a centimetre to his record set in retaining the Olympic title in Paris.

A clean sweep of medals in the boys 16-17 6.3km, Caleb Wagener winning from Joe Martin and Hamish Murray. Sam Ruthe won the boys 14-15 4.3km, Siena Mackley was second in the girls 16-17 4.3km and Nick Dobbie was third in the boys 18-19 8km.

OBITUARY
Former Canterbury athletic coach and manager Kevin Hickman ONZM died on Friday 23 August 2024 aged 74.
He was a successful coach for 25 years and Tasha Williams, eight times New Zealand hammer throw champion was among the many national champions he coached.
He was manager/coach of the New Zealand team to the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon.
Hickman was married to Joanna, New Zealand women’s 400m champion in 1975 and chairperson of Athletics New Zealand Board, 2000-2004.
He was a former detective in the Police Force and co-founder of Ryman Healthcare. He was influential in the horse racing industry as a sponsor, breeder and owner.
He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to aged care and sport.
