Resisprint International, La Chaux-de-Fonds, 2 July: Tiaan Whelpton 100m 10.31 -0.2 (4H1), 10.14 -0.1 (3) =PB. Rosie Elliott 200m 23.32 +1.0 (5). Zoe Hobbs 100m 10.96 +2.0 (1H1) PB Oceania Record, NZ National Record (one hundredths of a second faster than her time in Sydney in March), and a Paris Olympic Games qualifier. Hobbs was surprised to have run a qualifying time: “I didn’t think I would run a PB in the heat at all. I thought maybe a chance of doing the qualifier, but definitely not a PB. It was a bit of a shock when I saw what the time was.”
Hobbs will now be focusing on her lead up to the World Track and Field Championships in Budapest in August. “I’m absolutely stoked to have done the Qualifier time early. It takes a massive weight off my shoulders and makes a big difference leading into the rest of the season. I don’t have to chase the time now. I can focus on what I need to in the lead up to the World Champs.”

CROSS COUNTRY

TAUPO
35th North Island Cross Country Championships, Spa Thermal Park – 1 July 2023
Former Napier runner William Little now running for the Whippets won the senior 9km in 28:17, heading in Christian De Vaal by three seconds. Ronan Lee was third in 28:46 and last week’s national half marathon champion Michael Voss was fourth in 28:52. Anneke Arlidge runner up, in the 2021 national cross country, won the women’s 5km in 18:25, with the 2021 national champion Kerry White second in 18:44. Niamh de Hora was third in 18:56.

Sally Gibbs set a master women’s 60-64 record of 21:09 for the 5km, breaking Margie Peat’s 2019 record of 22:08. Steve Rees-Jones broke Ross McIntyre’s 2012 masters 45-49 record of 20:25 running 20:17 for the 6km. The Ruthe family had a successful day, led by Ben Ruthe outright winner of the master men 6km in 20:14. Ben’s son Sam set a race record of 9:40 in the under 16 3km, clipping three seconds off Joseph Morgan’s 2019 time, and daughter Daisy won the under 14 girls 3km in 11:32. Elliot Pugh shaved 15 seconds off his own under 18 record from last year in the under 18 5km returning a time of 15:24, and John Skinnon improved on his master 75-79 record by seconds with a run of 32:47.

Angie Petty, 12 times national champion, continued her winning way collecting the senior women’s 10km title in 38:39. Connor Melton, national 5000m bronze medallist won the senior men’s 10km in 31:43 from David Lee 31:49 and Russell Green 32:20.

INVERCARGILL
Southland Cross Country Championships, Waimumu – 1 July 2023
Runners braved the wintery blast for the championships. Sophie Shallard of Dunedin won the senior women’s 9km. National junior 3000m steeplechase champion Kennedy Taylor of St Pauls won the U/20 by a wide margin from Kimberley Iversen (Inv) who collected the under 18 title. National under 18 800m silver medallist James McLeay (St Pauls) won the under 18 6km, 25 seconds ahead of team mate Lucas Huia. Dwight Grieve (Fiordland) won the senior 9km by nearly two minutes taking out the masters title. Luke Geddes of Hill City Dunedin was second with Sagar Khemani of Fiordland third. Under 16 3km winners Max McGregor (Gore) and Millie McFadzien (Gore). Nicole Jackson W40 was first in the master women 6km with Debbie Telfer W65 second.

OBITUARY
Longstanding Auckland official, before the advent of the photo finish, Elaine Dark of Howick died on Friday 23 June 2023 aged 90. Elaine was a timekeeper along with her late husband Alan at Mt Smart Stadium, for over 40 years. They were both lap timekeepers at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games and both received an Athletic Auckland Merit Award.
