AUCKLAND
Dick Quax Memorial Meeting, Lloyd Elsmore Park Pakuranga – 28 November 2020
Hayden Wilde won the feature event, the 5000m, in memory of the late Dick Quax, running a time of 14:31.75, a solid effort in the windy conditions.

The national 5000m champion said that the run was part of his preparations for the Night of 5s, which takes place in December.

“The original plan if the wind wasn’t as high as it was, was to do a 3000 metres at Night of 5s pace.

“The goal was to go around 7:50 to 7:55, but we changed the plan and Craig (Kirkwood) said to do 200m reps, so it was 200m easy into the wind, which was 37’s to 40’s and then 31’s with the tail wind,” said Wilde.

He was nevertheless pleased with his effort.

“The first km was 2:40, so it was nice to get that part done and a 5000m under the belt with a 61 second last lap.”

Wilde explained that he is going for a strong time at the Night of 5s.

“I’m going for hopefully a very fast time and I’m looking forward to racing at that time of the evening when the wind should be down. It should be a beautiful night for it and the atmosphere is great for that race.”

Wilde has the potential to represent New Zealand on the track and in the triathlon at the Tokyo Olympic Games next year.

“It is on the cards,” said Wilde.

“It is potentially why we’re going for a fast time at Night of 5s.

“It’s always been in the back of my mind. With Covid being a semi-blessing in disguise, it’s given us the opportunity to aim for and it’s been really fun training for it.”

Zane Powell was second in a PB 14:53.93 and Fabian Downs third in 15:05.69.

The women’s 5000m went to Ainsley Thorpe in 16:52.06 from Anneke Grogan 16:54.66 PB and Bethany Bromfield 17:45.23. Chloe Browne 17:48.16 and Bella Browne 17:56.42 both PBs.

The strong tail wind down the main straight whipped the sprinters through to some fast times.

James Guthrie-Croft won the 100m in 10.48 from Mogammad Smith 10.69. Hamish Gill hit the 200m in 20.75 from Tommy Te Puni 21.52 and Zachary Saunders 21.75.

Symone Tafunai won the women’s 100m in 11.68 and Natasha Eady headed in the 200m in 23.56 from Nadia Evans 24.06.

MASTERTON
Regional Meeting #3, Colin Pugh Sports Bowl – 28 November 2020
Despite winning the final round of the Central Region Teams Competition in Masterton last Saturday, Palmerston North came up seven points short of a series victory.

Palmerston North scored 209 points in the final round with Kapiti Mana second with 194 points and Whanganui third with 146 points. The series competition saw Kapiti Mana take the title with 544 points from Palmerston North with 537 points, and last year’s titleholder Whanganui in third place with 437 points.

The series is designed to provide an ideal lead into the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships and athletes responded to this with a large field in most events.

The 100m sprints had five heats in the men’s race with close consideration of the camera needed to determine the A grade result, with Cody Wilson getting the decision in 10.76 +0.7 over Joseph Millar’s 10.77s .

The women’s 100m saw three heats, with Lili Szabo taking out the A grade race in 12.38 +0.8 before returning the long jump pit to claim victory there with a PB 5.61m -1.4.

Daniel Du Toit and Lucas Martin continued their rivalry in the walk, with Du Toit winning in 13:00.67. Martin’s second place time of 13:05.20 PB bettered the Athletics Manawatu Wanganui Centre’s open record.

In the 3000m, Benjamin Wall did a fine pace-making role and was able to set up Liam Lamb 8:23.30, Will Anthony 8:24.44 and Noah Macdermid 8:37.18 to personal bests. Also PB’s to Malcolm Hodge 8:45.67 and Kane Elms 8:46.44.
