2019 Oceania Area and Combined Events Championships Team Announcement

A New Zealand team of 113 athletes, including 11 Para Athletes, has been selected for the 2019 Oceania Area & Combined Events Championships in Townsville on 25-28 June (note: some athletes are provisional). The championships will be contested in senior, Under 20 and Under 18 grades.

The largest ever New Zealand team to be selected for the event features Olympians Nick Willis, Jacko Gill, Brent Newdick and Angie Petty, and Paralympians Holly Robinson, Anna Grimaldi and Jessica Hamill, along with a host of athletes who have represented New Zealand at a Commonwealth or World Championship level.

The Oceania Area & Combined Events Championships will be a significant event for many athletes still aiming to qualify for the 2019 Doha IAAF World Championships and 2019 Dubai World Para Athletics Championships, coming up in October and November respectively.

One athlete who has already met the women’s shot put IAAF entry standard is Maddison-lee Wesche, who will be one to watch following her IAAF World Championship qualifying throw of 18.32m at the Sir Graeme Douglas International on March 21st. Jacko Gill has also secured a qualifying mark in the men’s shot put (20.76m), but will no doubt be looking to build on that result. Lisa Adams features in the women’s F37 shot put, following her para world record breaking throws at Nationals and the Sir Graeme Douglas International Track Challenge.

Portia Bing will be aiming to cut 0.04s off her 400m hurdles PB to meet the IAAF entry standard for the IAAF World Championships. Cantabrians Angie Petty and Katherine Camp will once again battle it out in the women’s 800m, looking for a qualifying time of 2:00.60.

In the pole vault, senior women’s national champion Olivia McTaggart features, along with 2019 Junior Champion Imogen Ayris. McTaggart will be aiming to top the qualifying mark of 4.56m.

In the senior men’s 100m and 200m, Joseph Millar and Edward Osei-Nketia feature and will line-up against each other for the first time since the Capital Classic in January, where Edward took first over both distances.
