2021 Australian Track and Field Championships announcement

Athletics NZ has determined that the entry process for the 2021 Australian Track and Field Championships for NZ-based athletes is to be changed for 2021 given the impact of Covid-19.

We note that the current New Zealand Government travel advisory to Australia is “do not travel at this time” and further note the logistical challenges of travel between New Zealand and Australia (e.g. travellers needing to secure a spot at a NZ MIQ facility and carry out a 14-day quarantine upon return to NZ at a cost of NZ$3100).

Given this advice and Athletics NZ’s commitment to athlete welfare, including health and safety, Athletics NZ will only consider applications to enter the 2021 Australian Track and Field Championships from athletes who are on the Tokyo Olympics/Paralympics Long List.

New Zealand based Long List athletes who wish to enter must submit an expression of interest to compete to Athletics NZ via e-mail to Athletics NZ-HP Athletics NZ-HP Teams by 5pm Friday 12 March 2021. Each athlete expression of interest must include:

  • a current campaign plan through to the Tokyo Olympics/Paralympics demonstrating that competing at the 2021 Australian Track and Field Championships is a key part of their preparation for the Tokyo Olympics/Paralympics; and
  • confirmation that they have secured an MIQ slot for their return to NZ or, confirmation that they intend to remain offshore as part of their submitted Tokyo campaign plan. Where an athlete intends to return to NZ, the secured dates for their MIQ stay must be supplied and information demonstrating why / how a stay in MIQ will not have an adverse impact on their preparation for the Tokyo Olympics/Paralympics.

NZ athletes residing in Australia should enter the 2021 Australian Athletics Championships through their respective Australian State/Territory Athletics Association.

Once the expressions of interest process is complete, we will work with athletes and Athletics Australia directly on the official entries.
