HASTINGS

Hawke’s Bay Gisborne Championships, Mitre 10 Sports Park – 8/12 February 2022
Zoe Hobbs improved on her resident and national 100m record and also claimed the New Zealand allcomers record with a stunning time of 11.15 seconds.

Competing at the Hawke’s Bay Gisborne championships in Hastings Hobbs reduced her time set in Hastings last month of 11.21 and broke Australian Kerry Johnson’s allcomers record of 11.19 set at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games.

The conditions were perfect with the following wind at 1.4mps just under the allowable 2 metres per second.

Hobbs also had the satisfaction of setting an Athletics NZ Performance standard for the 2022 World Indoor Championships and World Championships and achieved an Athletics NZ B Performance standard for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“That’s epic, I’m so stoked,” said Hobbs on hearing that she also had the allcomers record.

“It was epic when I was here three weeks ago for the Potts Classic I said after the race that I’d love to come back.

“Every year when come it’s usually good conditions so I wanted to maximize the weekends that I’ve got left to try and do a qual and I’m in good shape, so why not maximize this time.”

Hobbs next race will be at the Sir Graeme Douglas meeting on Sunday.

INVERCARGILL

Athletics Southland Championships, Surrey Park – 12/13 February 2022
Gail Kirkman’s NZ masters high jump record was the highlight of the Southland Champs over the weekend, although the weather played a significant role.  Saturday’s wind and Sunday’s cold and showers hampered many performances. Fiordland’s Kirkman jumped 1.12m to break the W70 national masters high jump record to add to her W60 and 65 records as well as numerous NZ age group records in 400m, 800m, short hurdles and long hurdles. Trent Hogg (St Pauls) was also in the record form, exceeding the M20 Southland mark for the shot, recording 15.42m PB. Other highlights for the two day meet: William Robertson (Inv) 11.32 +5.2 for the 100m. Rebecca Peterson 100m 13.19 +3.8.  Peterson (U Cant) also won the long jump with 5.11m +5.6. Tessa Baird (St Pauls) triple jump 10.74m +5.0. Hogg also won M20 hammer 38.75m PB discus 42.04m and 7.26kg SP 13.20m PB. Rico Fisher (St Pauls) equally dominant in M18 throws – hammer 33.35m PB, shot 12.46m, discus 42.42m. Ashlynn Scherp (Inv) W20 discus 34.31m. Best race was 800m with strength versus speed – strength won out but only just as 3000m specialist James McLeay (St Pauls) pipped 800/400m specialist Ethan Friend (Queenstown) 2:06.09 to 2:06.67. McLeay won 1500m 4:15.58, Friend 400m 54.90, both in strong winds that reduced times. Sammy Fookes (Queenstown) dominated the women’s middle distances, winning 800m 2:20.78 and 1500m 4:56.70, again in trying windy conditions. Impressive run from 14-year-old Siena Mackley (Queenstown) finishing second in 1500m 5:01.21. Queenstown pair of Benny Britton and Sarah Douglas were the best of the 5000m runners – Britton 15:54.30, Douglas 18:05.8. Kennedy Taylor and 12-year-old Abby O’Boyle (both St Pauls) leapt to the top of the W18 2k steeplechase rankings with 7:30.35 to 7:32.22.
