National women’s 200m champion Georgia Hulls scored two opening season personal bests in the sprints. The 22 year old clocked 11.52 +0.3 in the 100m, improving on her second placing time of 11.58 at the national championships in March, and 23.35 +1.8 in the 200m to better her silver medal performance of 23.65 at the 2019 national championships. Livvy Wilson second in the 100m in 11.67 secured a PB, Natasha Eady was third in 11.79 and second in the 200m in 23.76.

Hull was pleased to be back on the track.

“I had a bad week of training and I wasn’t really expecting much but it all came together and racing against a good group of people and happy to be back racing again,” she said.

In order to qualify for the world championships Hull has set a target for the season.

“Around the 22.80 sort of area is what we’re looking for by the end of the season or in Aussie.”

Based in Auckland and trained by James Mortimer Hull has retained her Hastings Club membership.

“It’s good to race at the Potts and the nationals in Hastings and my mum is involved with the club down there.”

National 100m and long jump champion 20 year old Shay Veitch advanced to sixth all time New Zealander with a long jump of 7.80m +0.8. Veitch, from the Ariki Club in Dunedin, improved 9cm on his national title performance in Hastings in March, to now rank behind Bob Thomas, Aaron Langdon, Steve Walsh, Willie Hinchcliffe and Dave Norris.

Veitch said that he had a feeling warming up that he was ready for a big jump.

“It was funny, I texted my Dad as I was warming up that I’d do 7.80m and in the first round I did 7.80 exactly,” he said.

It hasn’t been plain sailing training in recent months for Veitch.

“I caught a foot strain in September and was out for nearly two months and I didn’t know if I could hold on for six jumps as it wasn’t a hundred percent but I knew I was running very fast and I knew something big was there.”
