Weekly Round Up: 31 October

Christian de Vaal won the 10,000m at AUT Millennium to achieve a performance standard time for the World Cross Country Championships.

31st Auckland Marathon, Devonport to Victoria Park via Tamaki Drive – 30 October 2022

Daniel Jones made it three Auckland Marathon victories in a row, traversing the Harbour Bridge and the length of Tamaki Drive in steady rain to clock 2:21:52.

Jones matched strides with British runner now with Whippets Luke Cotter and Daniel Balchin through halfway in 1:11:42, and the trio were still together at the turn in St Heliers for the run back into the city.

Balchin held on for second in 2:22:25, 24 seconds ahead of Cotter. Jacob Hendrickx was a distant fourth in 2:29:39, followed in by William Harris 2:29:52 and Australian Michael Marantelli 2:30:06.

Hannah Oldroyd winner in 2017 and runner up in the last two Auckland Marathons was superb over the second half improving five places to collect the women’s winning purse in 2:49:30.

Ingrid Cree was second in 2:50:39 and Rosie Weber of Australia third in 2:55:30.

Julian Oakley won the half marathon in 1:06:27, finishing just eight seconds ahead Michael Voss. Wellington’s Nathan Tse recorded a PB 1:07:34 in third. Olivia Witney, 2016 and 2017 winner was again the women’s half marathon winner in 1:16:55 from Brigid Dennehy 1:19:21 and Esther George 1:19:50.

McKinnon 10,000m, Bathurst world cross country qualifying race, AUT Millennium Stadium – 30 October 2022

Five U20 runners achieved the performance standard of 32:00 in their pursuit of selection to the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst on 18 February 2023.

Christian de Vaal 31:19.15 PB, Matt Hill 31:25.92 PB, Angus Monro 31:26.08 PB, Ronan Codyre 31:33.97 PB and Jamie Mora 31:48.88 PB.

Jack Paine was fourth in 31:26.80 PB, Ronan Lee 7th in 31:50.50 and Toby Tasker 8th in 32:32.62 PB.

Hannah Miller aiming for the senior women’s performance standard of 34:30 was 9th in 35:23.45.

Master runners Nick Moore 35:24.14 and Greg Darbyshire 35:24.51 rounded out the field.

Aotearoa Relay Festival, Tauranga Domain – 30 October 2022

An Auckland team of Lucy Shennan (17), Kate Borton (16), Maddie Kelso-Heap (17) and Amelie Fairclough (17) set a New Zealand U19 and U8 4x400m relay record of 3:46.52.

This breaks the record held by the New Zealand team of Angie Smit, Victoria Paine, Katrina Anderson and Abigail Watson who recorded 3:48.85 in Canberra in December 2008.

Mia Powell (18), Marielle Venida (17), Mai Poutawera (15) and Anna Tucker (18) were second in Tauranga in 3:52.51.
