DOMESTIC RESULTS
ROTORUA

New Zealand Road Mile Championship, Rotorua Lakefront – 3 May 2024
Laura Nagel raced to her 12th national title, winning the road mile in a New Zealand record of 4:46.78.
Nagel adds the road mile title to the track mile, a cross country and a road title, two titles over 1500m, and three in both the 3000m and 5000m.
Last year’s inaugural winner Brigid Dennehy in the previous record of 5:00.5 was second in a PB 4:47.31.
Nagel said: “I didn’t know what I was doing, the bends are not my strong point. But Brigid and I train together, I’ve got a kick, she’s got a kick, and it was who had it on the day.”
Nagel added that it always hard to win a national title.
“I’ve won a few and they are all different. It was an awesome event and I hope it was entertaining. I like to think all my races are cool to watch.”
Rebekah Aitkenhead was third in 4:48.35 PB. Lisa Cross (41) was next in 5:00.61 with Katherine Camp fifth in a PB 5:00.68. Benjamin Wall claimed his first senior title winning the men’s mile in 4:19.88. George Varney collected silver in 4:20.80 and Matthew Arnold the bronze medal in 4:22.39.
George Wyllie national junior 5000m champion won the U20 title in a national U20 record of 4:20.71 PB, breaking Elliott Pugh’s last years’ time of 4:26.2. Callum Murray was second in 4:24.11 and Az Cabusao third in 4:27.75. Poppy Martin successfully defended her U20 title in 5:07.59. Eleanor Pugh was second in 5:08.61 with the bronze going to Ella Smart who recorded 5:09.25.
Red Stag 60th Rotorua Marathon, incorporating the 2024 New Zealand championship, Government Gardens – 4 May 2024
Michael Voss added the 2024 victory to wins in Rotorua in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and claimed his first national marathon title, adding to his half marathon titles in 2023 and 2024 and the 10,000m track title in January. The race went right to the wire with Voss just getting home by four seconds over Cullern Thorby.
Voss said he tried to take Thorby at 30km. “But then he came back, and we kept taking turns at the front. He then got a little bit of a gap, and I thought he had me. I almost settled for second, but my workmates kept me going and then I gave it everything at the end,” said Voss.
Debbie Donald successfully defended her national women’s title in 2:46:30.
Donald forged ahead of Lydia O’Donnell before 10km and claimed the top spot.
It came seven weeks after she recorded a lifetime best of 2:40:39 in the Nagoya Marathon in Japan.
After taking the lead she told herself not to look back and was rewarded with the race win.
“I knew Lydia was a gun runner and she has fast legs too. I just had to keep going. It was so beautiful running around Lake Rotorua. To win the New Zealand title again is so surreal. I hope to come back next year and win a third New Zealand title.”

New Zealand Inaugural 5km Road Championship Runway5, Rotorua Airport – 4 May 2024
Laura Nagel made it New Zealand title number 13 in taking out the inaugural 5km championship, in 16:14, raced under lights at the Rotorua International Airport.
As in the mile championship, Nagel had the speed to outkick Brigid Dennehy over the final 200m, Dennehy recording 16:18. Rebekah Aitkenhead was third.
Nagel was delighted to come away from the weekend with two national titles.
“It was a very good weekend, it is never guaranteed. Brigid pushed me pretty hard and there was a lot of good banter. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Eric Speakman won the men’s title in 14:19, seven years after winning the national 1500m track title. In a close race with William Little, Speakman had the final say with a sprint at the end for a three second victory.
Speakman hopes he is out of the woods injury wise and looks forward to building on the national title.
“It has been a long time between drinks and I am not getting any younger. I have a new coach in Craig Kirkwood and we are starting to see the fruits of that. Hopefully I can prolong my career a bit more.”
