INVERCARGILL
Athletics Southland Meeting, Surrey Park – 6 March 2021
Quinn Hartley broke the ten-year-old New Zealand under 17 long jump record with a leap of 7.30m, with a favourable following wind of 1.4mps. The national junior champion was just 17 days off his 17th birthday.

His series of jumps were 6.59m +2.4, x, 7.02m -0.4, 7.13m +4.5, 6.95m +0.9, 7.30m +1.4 PB.

“It felt pretty good,” said Hartley on breaking the record.

“I had a really good take off on the last jump,” he added.

His coach Chris Knight said he was stoked for him in setting the record.

“I knew he was capable, he was focused and did exactly what he needed to do.”

Brendon Barnett of Nelson held the previous record of 7.19m set in Wellington in February 2011.

Hartley later teamed up with Jack Stalker, William Robertson and Rico Fisher to anchor the quartet to a Southland under 18 4 x 100m relay record of 45.16.

Another Southland record was broken by Teagan Ashley, setting a under 20 hammer record with her throw of 48.07m PB.

As reported last week, Jacqueline Wilson (75) highlighted the championships with two W75 world records. In the 3000m race walk Wilson clocked 19:18.90, breaking the record of 19:23.50 set by Hatue Matumoto of Japan in Tokyo in October 2017. Wilson also bettered Daphne Jones’ 2016 New Zealand masters W75 record of 20:33.59. In the 5000m race walk Wilson recorded 31:58.65, erasing Britta Tibbling of Sweden’s time of 32:44.76 set in Miyazaki Japan in October 1993. She also improved on her own New Zealand masters record of 32:51.20 set in early February.

Anna Thomson won the triple jump with 12.63m +1.0. Her series was 12.03, 12.29, 12.18, 12.63, 12.49, 12.43. A week earlier, her winning jump at the Sir Graeme Douglas International was 12.86m +0.6.

Matthew Bealing won the long jump with 6.68m from Jamie Kearns 6.07m and Seth Palmer-Rennie 6.01m. Lili Szabo cleared 5.72m W in the long jump.
