HAMILTON
Porritt Classic, Porritt Stadium – 10 February 2024

Sam Tanner was all class in the 1500m cruising through in 3:43.13 after providing the perfect pace for nine runners out of a field of 20 to achieve a personal best time.

David Lee was delighted with his time of 3:43.94 in second place a near three second improvement on his best. Benjamin Wall was third in 3:46.57 with Daniel Prescott claiming a PB 3:46.85 in fourth.

Tanner said he was pleased to have helped.

“It was a perfect night for a pace that was in the range of all these guys, so to be able to pace it for them is a cool opportunity and it’s awesome to see how many PBs happened today.”

“My fitness is coming along nicely so we’re happy with today’s run, leading towards Paris Olympics,” said Tanner.

Lee who is knocking on the door of a sub four mile appreciated Tanner’s help.

“Sam said he would pace us around to bang on 3:45, but I wanted about 3:43, so I said I’d just go as hard as I could with 300m to go and I found myself on the back of him and I was wow I’m actually here, I started to tie up in the last 50 metres, but it was good,” said Lee.

Caleb Wagener held on to win the national under 20 3000m title from 14 year old Sam Ruthe who chased hard down the home straight.

“I went out hard and tried to get a time before School sports and it paid off. A PB by five seconds so I’m happy with that,” said Wagener.

Poppy Martin who is to take up a scholarship in Los Angeles won the women’s under 20 3000m title in 9:45.23, from Zara Geddes.
