Portia Bing was one of the star performers at the Sir Graeme Douglas International presented by Harcourts Cooper & Co setting a New Zealand 400m record and climbing to number five on the all-time New Zealand lists.

Among the highlights was Ethan Olivier’s New Zealand resident triple jump record of 16.44m -0.6, claiming it from his brother’s 16.33m at the Christchurch ITM meeting.

Lex Revell-Lewis almost erasing the New Zealand 400m record of 46.09, with his powerful run for third in 46.12. Danielle Aitchison with another impressive sprint in the Para Athlete 100m in 13.63.

OBITUARY

Former top decathlete and later successful coach Paul Lothian of Whangarei, passed away on Friday 8 March aged 80.

Paul had a PB in the decathlon of 6233 points and he competed with success at the New Zealand Championships over eight years, third in 1966 with 6062 points, second in 1967 (5997), third in 1968 (5867), second in 1969 (6219), first and national champion in 1971 with (5935) and second in 1973 with (6099).

The year he won the national title he married sprint hurdler Jan Mack who he then coached. Jan won four national 100m hurdles titles between 1970 and 1977 as well as the inaugural women’s 400m hurdles title in 1976.

Paul was educated at Penrose High School and was a member of the Onehunga Club based at Waikaraka Park. His father Jack Lothian was a timekeeper at the Wednesday weekly meetings.

Paul, introduced to coaching by Roy Williams, guided a number of athletes from their early days of taking up the sport, including high jumper Hamish Kerr, five times national triple jump champion Nneka Okpala, Jeffery Thumath 2008 national long jump and 2009 200m champion and T44 Para Athlete, Kate Horan who won 200m silver at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

Paul’s business Paja Products Ltd manufactured pole vault and high jump landing areas and provided sprint and strength training for athletes and team sports.
