Calling all emerging distance runners and race walkers!

The Athletics NZ Distance Event Group is hosting its annual Emerging Talent Camp at Hanmer Springs in Canterbury from Sunday to Tuesday 1-3 October 2023. The focus of the camp is the development of emerging athletes and to put in place the foundations required for long term distance and racing walking success. The camp will also provide an exciting opportunity for development athletes and their coaches to participate in workshops and train with athletes from different squads.

Coaches can also benefit from sharing and learning from one another as well as the keynote presenters.  As a coach of a developing athlete, we would encourage you to attend, with your athlete, to maximise the benefits of ongoing learning. 

The camp will be held at Hanmer Springs Forest Camp and applications are invited from Athletics New Zealand registered athletes aged 16 and over and their coaches to attend. Start time is 2pm Sunday 1 October with the camp concluding at lunchtime on Tuesday 3 October. The estimated cost for accommodation and meals is approximately $215, (with support available for ANZ-HP program athletes). 

Event Group Project Co-ordinator Kim Mickle said: “The annual Athletics NZ distance event group camps have proved hugely popular in the past and we expect the 2023 edition to be no different. Athletes and coaches have a great opportunity to expand their knowledge base and rub shoulders with other like-minded people across the three-day programme. I’d recommend to any emerging athlete and their coach to book their spot as early as possible.”

Spaces are limited and your application will be conditional upon acceptance.  Preference will be given to athletes whose coach will also be in attendance.
