Following the continued uncertainty around Covid restrictions and the fact parts of the Waikato are currently at an Alert Level 3, Athletics NZ and the Local Organising Committee Athletics Waikato Bay of Plenty have agreed to cancel the 2021 New Zealand Road Championships.

The event was due to be staged at Mystery Creek, Hamilton on Sunday November 7. Alert Level 3 restrictions are currently in place in the city and other parts of the Waikato.

Athletics NZ Competitions Manager Jason Cameron said: “We acknowledge the extensive work put in by the Waikato Bay of Plenty LOC, officials and volunteers to deliver this final event in our winter programme in very trying circumstances. With the continued uncertainty and likelihood that Waikato and other regions will remain in elevated alert levels, the pragmatic decision was made to cancel the event for 2021.”

In the coming weeks we hope to announce the venue for the 2022 New Zealand Road Championships.

The 2021 New Zealand Road Championships were originally scheduled to take place on Sunday September 5 but were postponed due to the Covid-19 restrictions in place across the country at the time.

Those who have entered the event will be given a full refund. These will be processed commencing next week.
