Athletics NZ has received confirmation that the board of University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ) has made the difficult decision not to send a New Zealand team to the 2022 World University Games due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 on event protocols and international travel requirements, amongst other factors. This competition was scheduled to be held in Chengdu, China on 26 June – 7 July 2022.

Athletics NZ understands that athletes may be disappointed with this decision, and looks forward to a time where we can safely and responsibly send a World University Games team.
The next World University Games is scheduled to be held in Ekaterinburg, Russia on 8 – 19 August 2023.
